Hawaiian International Flight Reports for September 1998

Flight Reports are placed here from our famous world class pilots.

They are reported in the order in which I recieve them ie: The first one who files gets the first listing.

Mike Monce

HI10 time gate-to-gate: 35:40, FL200

HI11 time 42:10, FL200, longer time due to ong downwind on approach to 8L at PHNL

HI30 time 25:20, 10,000 ft, some scattered clouds (which x-plane insists is overcast) at Kahului

HI31 time 22:00, 10,000 ft, return trip to HNL uneventful., 2.1, Ready for my next assignment! I've been setting "realistic Realiability" to 1. Should I continue this, or are the mechanics at the airline really good? I know in the past this setting has caused, despite Austin's claim, too many failures.

Mike Monce, Sept. 1, Sept 23, 105 Kona-stop at Kalulai, FL150, 36min. T storm on approach at Kalulai

flight continues to HNL, FL150, 29min

130 HNL-stop Lanai City, 5,000ft, 17min. Interesting VFR approach to Lanai,

Lanai-Hilo, FL180, 30 min.

183 Hilo-Kona, 10,000 ft (to get over mtn.) 18 minutes, 2.2,

It seems to me that a number of these short hop flights (especially the Hilo-Kona) would be more economical made with the ATR rather burning a lot of fuel at low altitude with a 757.

Just trying to save the airline some money

HI636-637 San Fran. - San Diego 2:09

HI130-131 Honolulu-Hilo (stop over in kahului) 1:31 (heavy weather)

HI4504-4505 Milan - Nice (stop over in barcelona) 3:55 , 7hr 35 min, Autopilot went nuts on final descent to san diego.

4512 - 4513 Milan - Berlin - Milan Total time 2hr 39min Flights were uneventful

4514 - 4515 Milan - Warsaw - Milan Total time 2hr 57min. Flights were uneventful

4516 - 4517 Milan - Prague - Milan WHOA!!!!!!!!! , 7hr 46 min, on 4516 Milan to Prague I had the strangest thing happen. Conditions were IFR minimums to begin with BUT: downwind to ruzyne (prague) I encountered serious electrical failure (not to be mistaken with swissair). I lost almost everything. artificial horizon, ILS, GPS..etc etc. the only thing that worked was the radio altitude system, Ceilings were 1000 scattered so final was done very low and very delibrately. In the end the wheels chirped sweetly and none of the passengers knew any better as to what happened. ALSO...great scenery flying over the swiss alps. Total time 2hr 10min.

HS15 KOA - HNL B737 0:38

HS105 HNL - OGG - KOA B737 0:52, 3:52, I just returned from Hong Kong.

It was my first time there since the opening of their

new airport, and no need to mention that the new airport

is much bigger and cleaner than the old Kai Tak.

Personally, new and modern airport lacks in the rather

Oriental atmosphere when you first exit the customs,

but I guess that's how things are.

HI 12 Honolulu-Kona B737 32 min

HI 12 Kona-Honolulu B737 36 min

HI 72 Honolulu Lanai ATR 28 min. Flight was longer, following the flight plan programmed by Flightplanner: it took more time, but I arrived exactly aligned with Lanai's runway

HI 73 Lanai Honolulu ATR 24 min First flight with X-Plane 4.20, visual approach and landing on rwy26

HI 84 Honolulu Lihue B737 22 min. Landing under a (guess?) rainstorm. The first time I will find fine weather at Lihue I will pay a bottle of wine to everybody!

HI 85 Lihue Honolulu B737 21 minutes Uneventful flight back to hub.

HI 4506 Milan Rome A340 53 min Very nice evening flight, with the stars above and the lights of beautiful italian cities below. Longer approach: strong westerly wind forced landing on rwy 25. Excellent IFR flight with X-Plane 4.21

HI 4510 Rome Athens A310 1 hour 31 min. Long (for me) flight to lovely Greece. I was able to hold the complete flight without auto-pilot, in 5 minutes less than planned, with a fine approach and landing using SAS excellent approach chart.

Athens Iraklion LGIR Gulfstream V, 36 min. A fine flight over the islands, with a superb plane (excellent instrument panel and engine sound). BUT, failure probability was set to 1 and I was left without the nose gear. I don't think, Austin, that in real world every flight of eight you are left without instruments or landing gear! Why did I went to the island of Crete? Easy asnwer: to spend my holidays. See you in October again. (For real holidays, I will fly from Milan LIMC directly to Iraklion LGIR in 2 hours 40 min in an MD-83. Hope to take good photos, the flight is early in the morning).

No problem landing with a little rudder trim., Sorry to take so long to get this info to you. My modem "went south". Long term, good news as I now am running either 34K or 56K with a new modem, depending on if I have this thing hooked up properly now., Submit
