Stephan Buchmann, Reporting for what month:January 1999, Today's Date:January 15. 99, Flights:HI80 20min, HI81 33min, HI4512 70min,

HI4600 32min, HI4601 30min, HI4602 57min,

HI4603 62min., #of Hours: 5h 4min, Problems:

Flight HI81 to HNL with 0,2 Mi visibility at HNL and strong wind 240 at 20, gusts 25 clouds covered at 800 ft AGL. I tried several approaches. Question what is the minimum vis. for the funny 26R ILS? Am I right that you need to have the runway insight before starting the turn (I am assuming you have the same "not straight in" ILS beam?). 26R failed. OK, I tried 26L BC. Didn´t work either because the range of the ILS 08R is pretty short, and I had on one Nav radio thanks to the stupid GPS (hard to flip from VOR to ILS in a one man cockpit when flying in a "thick soup" as we say in german). So I finally tried to use the VOR which is pretty close to 26 L and did some DME math. I corrected the lateral position and made it. I doubt this is a suggested procedure. Can somebody check NAV equipment in the scenery we´re using? How can you land on 26 L/R in poor wheather? cheers SB

Note:

I tried to compare fuel consumption at different mach speeds on the way MUC-AMS-MUC.

I noticed that my HI 737 didn´t do more than M 0,82 at FL330. Using M 0,75 I burned approx. 1000 pounds less than with M 0,82. At M 0,82 I was 5 minutes faster (comparable direct routing, similar approach). , My son Jan Hendrik says "gooky" for the German "Flugzeug" (aircraft). He´s spotting even smallest aircrafts precisely (We see planes on the "26 L/R" glide to EDDM from our breakfast table!) Now I tought him Boeing. Sounds like "boin" similar to oil with an B and N. See you, Stephan, Submit

Dave Weaver, January, 1/31/99, Flights:

1/27/99

HI502 Detroit Metro to Chicago's O'Hare International (737)

Took off from Detroit at 7:50PM in calm winds, 25,000ft OC ceiling. Leveled off at FL240. Halfway over Lake Michigan, overcast was down to 1,800ft and ORD ATIS reported a windshear alert. Landed around 8:30PM after a gusty approach.

1/27/99

HI 512 Departing from O'Hare to Winston Salem (737)

Took off from ORD that night at 8:40PM enroute to KINT. Leveled off at FL320. Flight was mostly clear until reaching the SW tip of Virginia. Smooth weather provided for an wasy VFR night landing into KINT Rwy33 since the ILS freq I had seemed to be incorrect (110.30).

1/31/99

HI450, a nonstop commuter flight from San Francisco Intl to Fresno (KFAT)(737)

Took off from SFO this morning in 3,400 OC and rain. I reached my cruising altitude of FL220 in 7 minutes. The flight above the clouds was pretty smooth until approx 30dme KFAT. Fresno had 4mi vis and thunderstorms at 3,200 OC. Needless to say, although there was no windshear alert posted on ATIS, it was quite a bumpy final approach into Rwy29R. Landed safe and sound for a total of 38 minutes in the air., 2.5 hours for these three total, Only "problem" was a faulty ILS frequency for Winston Salem rwy 33, but smooth, clear weather afforded an easy VFR night landing., This is great fun! Please email me any other flights you'd like me to have. Thanks!!!

Dave
