Flight Report for August 2001

HI81 thru 88. Interisland fllghts between Lihue and Honolulu using A340. Passenger load was about 300 each trip. FL800 for Westbound and 700 for eastbound flights. Weather cooperative. Aircraft functioned well without porblems.

Charter Flights

KMIA-KATL 516 NM GBX jet (a what?! Global Express. Not a bad performing little jet as I recall) 99 minutes

KATL-KCHA 92 NM Gulfstream II (lacking some avionics - no GPS and only one NAV. Not realistic by todays biz jet standards, but it did make for some exciting navigation) 46 minutes

KCHA-KTLH 281 NM Learjet (could not tune in multiple NAVS, ADF or transponder. I guess I should have caught that little bug on my pre-flight). 58 minutes

KTLH-KMCO 196 NM (my dream machine! BUT, the Gulfstreams (II and V) are wobbly on take-offs and landings with any crosswind at all. The landing gear configuration seems like it should be wider) 40 minutes

KMCO-KFLL 155 NM Gulfstream V (I'll stick with a sure thing, but may alternate between the GBX and Gulfstream on future charters) 47 minutes

NOTES: Wind started picking up when approaching Honolulu. ATC cleared the flight for landing and mentioned that there was a wind shear risk. As the aircraft landed on the runway the tip of the right wing just lightly scraped the runway for about 2/5 of a second which was unnoticed by me. this did not damage the wing or puncture it but the aircraft will have to have a safety check before being able to fly again. I must stress that this incident posed no threat to the aircraft or it's cargo and that this incident was beyhond pilots control.
