HI307 KPHL-KJFK 82NM 25 minutes, 3 hours 54 minutes, HI303 KIAD (Washington Dulles International) to KJFK (New York John F. Kennedy International) - Enroute received error warning of a left gear malfunction. Notified KJFK of a potential problem and was granted a most direct route. We attempted to cycle the gear several times (electrically) and still got the error light. Manual extension of the gear was also fruitless. Contacted Hawaiian International maintenance VIA the on-board telephone for any suggestions. Our emergency procedures manual could not offer any additional help (besides what we already tried and checking for tripped curcuit breakers). Maintenance advised their only recommendation was to land with the working gear extended. Just what I figured. Contacted KJFK and declared an emergency and squawked 7700. Advised JFK of our intentions and requested emergency equipment stand-by. I contacted the senior flight attendant and advised her to brief the passen!
gers of emergency landing procedures. We received a straight in approach to JFK. Although most of our flight was through thunderstorms with resulting turbulent air, the God's smiled upon us and the skies cleared slightly on our approach. Best of all, the winds at landing were managable. Nearing the threshold I advised passengers to brace and flared out. I touched down at about 120 knots with full flaps and held the left wing up as long as possible. Amazingly, we slid to a stop on the runway with no resulting fire. Passengers disembarked VIA the slide. Although badly shaken the passengers were not injured (however I'm sure some will think of some injury to collect on). The aircraft suffered major damage to the left wing and engine and will no doubt be out of service for some time. All proper reports have been made to the FAA., Submit
